1 and 1/2 Men and a Sex Symbol

The Premiere

Tonight the highly anticipated return of Two and a Half Men aired on CBS. I won't get into too much plot detail but if you don't want any spoilers stop reading now. The episode started with a farewell to the deceased Charlie Harper (Sheen). No straight up malicious shots were vicariously made to Real-Life Sheen. But then again the funeral (filled with Harper's ex one night stands) did have a few punchlines that were probably not only towards his character but him too. I mean recently Sheen did admit he deserved to be fired and even apologized live at Sunday nights Emmys, he had to see something coming. Nevertheless the episode re-focused quickly towards the sale of Harper's Malibu beach house with several prominent 90's TV stars making guest cameos as potential bidders. And then the moment we all waited for the introduction to Walden Schmidt (Kutcher), a billionaire entrprenuer who made his fortune after Microsoft bought out his software. Schmidt is a recently heart broken loner who predictably finds a connection with Alan Harper (Jon Cryer). The two hit it off and the rest of the story will be determined as the season progresses. Side Not: Walden? After that long of a fuckin' hiatus that's what you come up with? Anyways to my thoughts.

The Good

A solid episode all around. Chuck Lorre could not have handled the Sheen situation better and he still kept diggnity by not trashing Sheen like he could and probably should have. Cryer is hilarious and absolutely makes the episode, further establishing himself as one of TV's most underrated actors. The connection between Walden and Alan is pretty believable, Alan already having gone through a divorce and Walden going through a breakup of his own. Their chemistry is natural and should only grow.

The Bad

How many times am I gonna see Ashton Kutcher topless or even fully blurred out naked. I didn't know the Two and Half Men target demographic is females ages 14+. Yeah dude is a stud (Goddess/Freak Demi Moore case and point), but why is CBS over selling the fact. Sheen was a dog who we could all get on board with. Kutcher on the other hand doesn't have nearly the same appeal. Not to sound sexist but the show is generally a guys show and yes I can imagine a lot of girlfriends and wives tune in but that's probably because their dude is watching it in the first place. Is CBS trying to cover the fact that Kutcher simply is just not that funny. That's my take on it (Kelso That 70's Show/every shitty romantic comedy he's ever been in case and point).

2.5/4 Stars...The jury's out on Kutcher, Cryer was brilliant
