Humpday Sports Talk

A lot of things are going on in the sports world right now, and I figured I'd chime in and offer some fantastic opinions on many of these things. Well what's going on you may ask? First of all, the MLB playoffs are approaching quickly, and it looks like the Mets are going to just miss the playoffs again! As we Mets fans like to say, "we got it next year." The Yankees are up to no good as usual, clinching the playoffs, spending money aimlessly, setting records (see Mariano Rivera post), and preparing themselves to get swept by the Detroit Tigers in the 1st round of the playoffs...see ya next year Yanks!

With 2 weeks in the books already in the NFL, I'm here to provide you a quick breakdown of the NY teams, and other teams who have looked good and not so good thus far. Real quickly, The Jets have looked a lot, and I mean A LOT, better than the Giants have. Despite having to mount a great comeback in week 1, Gang Green dominated a far less superior Jacksonville Jaguars team last week, 32-3. Luke McCown looked worse than Fuzzy trying to QB back in the day at The Master's School. The Giants started off the season on a sour note, with a tough road loss to Rex Grossman and the Redskins. Eli looked like Eli, the run game was pretty non-existent, and the defense played OK, but the secondary looked weak. This past Monday night the Giants played a depleted St. Louis Rams team, and gained a much needed victory. Once again, the secondary looked pretty weak, and the linebackers faked injuries, but hey, the end justifies the mean. The season doesn't look like it has too sunny of an outcome, and losing Domenik Hixon to a 2nd straight ACL tear doesn't help either. Around the league, The Patriots and Packers have looked the most impressive, with the Chiefs and Seahawks looking pretty abysmal. Surprise team has gotta be the Lions, with Stafford running the show and their huge DT's dominating the defensive side of the ball.

NBA training camps would have started as of yesterday, however, there is no NBA right now! These owners and players just can't seem to work out a reasonable deal, and it is looking more and more likely that there is not going to be an NBA season, much to the pleasure of Barry Badrinath. Barry has these wild dreams where he envisions Dwight Howard coming to the "Brooklyn Nets", teaming up with Deron Williams, and leading the "real" NY team to an NBA championship in 2013. Realistically, the Knicks have about a 1000x better chance of winning a championship, but if they keep drafting players like Renaldo "more to's than pts" Balkman, and passing on players like Steph Curry and Brandon Jennings, then I'm not too sure they can. However, I kind of like the Iman Shumpert pick, and think he has potential to be a contributor for the Knicks this season. The worst thing about the NBA not having a season is that this years rookie class will not be in the very popular NBA 2K12 videogame. For gamers like myself, this will not let people play with Kyrie Irving, the next best PG in the NBA.

In the college sports world, College Football is well underway, and College Basketball is on the horizon. The cream of the crop seems to have risen to the top as usual, as we see familiar figures at the top of the polls, including teams like Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama, Boise St., and Stanford. Now, I didn't mention Wisconsin in this, however I really like their squad this year. Dirk Diggler might be able to give you a better breakdown of the team, but I like Russell Wilson at the QB spot, which is backed up by a solid ground game and all around good defense. My favorite player in the NCAA this year has gotta be Justin Blackmon, a WR from Oklahoma State. Dude is a boss. Guaranteed top 5 pick in next year's NFL draft. Check out his highlights in the video below against Arizona this season. The spin move looks like it is out of a Madden game. Look for LSU to drop a few games soon. I'll call it now, an Oklahoma v. Wisconsin National Championship. With college basketball beginning at the end of October, I'll offer some words of advice. The top 5 teams will be UNC (by a lot), Ohio St., Uconn, Florida, and Duke. With conferences re-aligning and all of that nonsense going on, I'll be posting a new column about that at a later date. I find the NCAA trying to make a "big 4" of conferences ludicrous, but that's an issue for a different day.
